As far as Robert and Marlo Dubé are concerned, music makes the world go round. To share their passion, the couple launched Hawk’s Nest House Concerts in southwest Marion County.

Since the backyard concert venue located near West Port High school opened in 2019, over three dozen artists have performed there. It’s become a local celebration of Tropical Rock (“Trop Rock”), the popular genre with an island vibe that features elements of rock and roll, country, Caribbean and reggae.

“We don’t hunt, fish, golf or go to sporting events. This is what we do for fun,” says Robert. “We support the artists and are blessed enough to consider many our friends. We are not a business; we are just the hosts.”

Front and center in the big backyard is a large covered pavilion and stage for both the artists and guests. If the forecast includes rain, tents are set up so everyone can stay dry.

Bring your own chair to kick back and enjoy the music. Most concerts last about three hours with a break mid-way.

The venue doesn’t sell food or drinks, but shows typically start with an “eat and greet” an hour prior. Bring your own beverage and a covered dish to share. Marlo’s signature Brunswick Stew has become a fan favorite.

These traveling musicians don’t have high-end tour buses. They pay their own expenses, so performing at venues like Hawk’s Nest is a way to broaden their exposure. In addition to CDs, most artists have additional merchandise to sell, such as T-shirts or hats..

A donation of $20 per person is collected with all proceeds going to the artists.

“We keep nothing. In fact, we give away prizes,” says Robert.  “Everyone who pays the donation gets entered into our drawings.  Usually, it’s a signed CD by the artist, and at least one more fun prize.”

“Unless there is a hurricane, we don’t cancel,” he adds. “We have plenty of front yard parking, and for those who wish to bring a motorhome, camper or tent, we welcome you to stay the night in the backyard.”
