Nature’s Calling

Trout Lake Nature Center celebrates the best of natural Florida.

Written By Cynthia McFarland

Discover the unexpected. Learn something new. Nature has a way of surprising and delighting us.

Since 1988, Trout Lake Nature Center in Eustis has been helping visitors connect with the natural world while educating them about Central Florida’s natural ecosystems and wildlife.

People of all ages—students, seniors, families and anyone new to Florida—appreciate the many hands-on opportunities offered in the 230-acre peaceful setting that is Trout Lake Nature Center.

“This is our 35th year,” says Eileen Tramontana, executive director. “We do early morning birding, evening campfires, scavenger hunts and much more. We’re doing lots of things to get people outdoors, to slow down and look around them.”

The center’s calendar is packed with monthly activities.

Regular events include the First Saturday Birding Walk with a local birding expert.

On the third Friday of each month, Friday Night Naturalist features a presentation followed by a Q&A by a plant or animal expert or scientist.

Starting October 12, monthly Inspired by Nature workshops will teach painting with watercolors led by artist/instructor Ellen Westerham. All materials are provided in the $50 fee. Visit tinyurl.com/mry8y9sv for details and to register for one or more programs.

The Home School Parents’ Workshop on October 21 provides a variety of activities and ideas for parents teaching children in both lower and upper schooling levels. On the evening of October 21, the Third Saturday Concert features a folk music concert, kicking off at 7pm with a potluck. Sunday Fun Day on November 12 offers nature walks and hands-on activities with an environmental theme, and artists and crafters will display their nature-themed gift ideas at the Nature Craft Fair on December 10.

But you don’t have to wait for a special event to come explore.

Trout Lake Nature Center is open every day except Monday. Walk the trails through the scenic wetlands habitat. Venture along the 800-foot boardwalk to the education dock on Lake Trout. Bring a picnic to enjoy on the grounds, and take in the majesty of the huge grandfather oak dating back to the days of Thomas Jefferson.

Admission is free for members or just $5 per vehicle. Annual memberships are $35 per individual and $50 per family. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the center is entirely supported by visitor admissions, donations and fundraisers.
